CDN Advantages and Implications

Following the huge performance benefits experienced after upgrading our Moodle hosting to use CDN (Content Delivery Network) based delivery, it is timely to consider further advantages and implications. There are a few related questions we want to address:

  • Do we host the entire Moodle instance on the CDN, or just the shareable content such as videos etc?
  • If entirely hosted on the CDN, how does this affect interactivity?
  • If only the shareable content elements are hosted on the CDN, how do we deal with cross-domain scripting for these?

Hosted Moodle hosts the entire Moodle instance on a CDN. The CDN is implemented at DNS (Domain Name Server) level, so with distributed DNS if you ping from, say, Perth, Australia you ping a Sydney host, whereas pinging from Sacramento sees a San Francisco server. The technology is extremely clever in the way it caches close to the user but never misses a beat with even the slightest dynamic change.

Since the server that is communicating with the user is very close to them, content delivery is faster, providing an overall superior user experience. During the rollout and implementation every aspect of dynamic response and interactivity of the CDN has been tested extensively to provide optimum delivery of your web content.

As the entire Moodle instance is hosted on the CDN there are no cross-domain scripting issues.

Version Updates

Whenever release a new version of Moodle (e.g, 2.7.2 to 2.8), we first test it on our servers and make sure everything is working as expected. We look after all the "technical" issues so you don't need to! We then completely automate the upgrade process and send you an email to let you know an update is available.

This leaves you in complete charge of exactly when your instance is upgraded, so you can minimize inconvenience for your users. Once you are ready to upgrade, it's a simple "click and confirm" process.
